A guide to street photography: Antonio Olmos and the dark art of manual exposure

A guide to street photography: Antonio Olmos and the dark art of manual exposure

The gear. Street photographers tend to like their cameras small and discreet, but Olmos is happy with his full-size, full-frame DSLR, and he carries no backup except an old iPhone 4 with a shattered screen. He uses the same DSLR for both his day job and his creative street photography, and the only thing he changes is the lens: Whereas he might use a range of focal lengths for newspaper portraiture, he sticks to a small, fixed wide-angle lens when he's on the street. Specifically, Olmos uses a 35mm lens, which is ideal for street photography since many photographers feel it comes close to matching the eye's natural field of view.

Owners Of Large Screen Devices Tend To Use More Data, According To Study

It has been shown recently that phablets, or rather phones with larger than normal displays, are catching on and have been catching on for a while. Q3's smartphone shipments saw that 21% of their shipments were from phablets alone, so safe to say there are many who fans of large displays for their smartphones. While it might not necessarily be practice in terms of putting it into pockets or placing it next to your face when making phone calls, we certainly see its appeal. Its larger display allows for websites to show off more content comfortably, and watching movies and playing games is also more enjoyable as well.

President Obama's Speech Gets Printed In 3D

3D printing can be pretty handy and pretty novel, from printing things such as items of clothing to even a 3D visualization of the President of the United States' voiceprint, which is exactly what French artist, Gilles Azzaro, did when he 3D printed a 39 second clip from one of President Barack Obama's speeches. The clip is from his State of the Union speech and ironically enough, the part that was printed was actually President Obama's views on how 3D printing could revolutionize the way things are made, so perhaps it was more than just a happy coincidence that Azzaro decided to choose this portion.

Nike FuelBand SE review: more social features, much longer battery life

The FuelBand SE's greatest improvement is its battery life, although the new software features add even more ways to monitor how active you are - and hopefully improve. Nearly two years after the first FuelBand appeared, Nike's social features still make it an easy device to recommend. However, your mileage will vary depending on how many of your buddies are already using Nike+ and how deeply you're looking to track exercise. At this point, there are so many fitness-tracking products that the best option for you might not necessarily be the best one for your friend.

A closer look at the 2015 Chevy Colorado

The 2015 Chevy Colorado was one of last week's big debuts at the LA Auto Show, so big that our editors ranked it second in our list of Top Five debuts from the show. We thought Chevy's reentry into the midsize pickup market deserved a closer look, so we sent West Coast Editor Mike Harley to talk to Jeff Luke, chief engineer of midsize and fullsize trucks for Chevrolet. What he learned goes deeper than what our lenses could capture when the truck debuted on stage in LA.

Google Confirms RAW And Native Burst Mode Support For Android

It was reported last week that Google might be working on a new Android camera API that supports RAW image output. Google has now officially commented on the matter. Speaking with CNET, Google spokeswoman Gina Scigliano said that support for RAW and native burst mode is present right now in “Android's latest camera HAL (hardware abstraction layer) and framework supports raw and burst-mode photography.” This basically means that support for these features is already built deep into the Android OS, however the company is yet to expose a developer API so that programmers can tap into the features through their own software.

T-Mobile UK already has Sony's Xperia Z1 flagship, but its US-based counterpart is still to get it. Leaks of the US version of the Z1 continue though, and we now have both the front and the back of the device. The back is branded with the carrier logo (US carriers love their logos), while the front shows the Sony-customized Android 4.2 build and the 4G connectivity icon.
Note that there are a couple of differences between this unit and the official Xperia Z1 units we've seen so far. Namely, the 3.5mm audio jack has moved and the front-facing camera is on the other side of the Sony logo.

The 2015 Colorado represents Chevrolet's return to the midsize pickup segment in the US, and the automaker wants it to be known for its versatility, which is the reason why the beach patrol vehicle on display at the LA Auto Show was built. The Tokyo Motor Show has proven to be far deeper and more interesting in 2013 than it has been in recent years, surely a trailing indicator of the revived auto industry in Japan and throughout the world. This Subaru Viziv Evolution concept is a case in point – it looks not unlike the Viziv Concept that the company hauled over to the Geneva Motor Show in March of this year.

Subaru Legacy Concept has us getting our hopes up

It happens all the time. We get excited about a really attractive Subaru concept, and then the production car comes out and, well, "disappointed" isn't a strong enough word. (Compare that hot Impreza concept to the final production car.) So while we're hopeful that this new Legacy concept previews something sleek for Subaru, allow us to be fully on record as not getting our hopes up. Anyway, let's talk about how good this car looks. From the front, comparisons to the Buick Regal GS are warranted, but from all other angles, it has a very four-door coupe-like shape.

The Nismo version of Nissan's high-tech supercar may be getting most of the headlines today, but we shouldn't forget that the car on which it's based, the garden-variety GT-R, has been significantly updated for 2015, as well. What Nissan engineers focused on for the new model year was making the GT-R a more well-rounded GT car. That means dialing some more compliance into the car's very firm suspension for a more comfortable ride, as well as lightening up the steering at low speeds to make urban maneuvering easier. The braking calibration has also been changed to be more linear and smooth when slowing from normal, everyday speeds.
