Hands-On With Sony's New Wedge-Shaped Tablet S

Still got tablet fever. Somebody must, because they just keep coming. Sony unveiled the final versions of its two new Android tablets Wednesday. These are the same two devices we saw last month — the curvy, wedge-shaped full-sized tablet is now called the Sony Tablet S, and the dual-screen tablet that folds up into a pocket-sized burrito is now called the Sony Tablet P.

The Tablet S will land in stores this September, priced at $500 for a 16GB version and $600 for the 32GB version. The Tablet P will arrive closer to the end of the year, and pricing on that one is still up in the air.

The Minimal Multitouch Mutewatch

The Minimal Multitouch Mutewatch

The Mutewatch is like an iPod Nano, without the annoying iPod part. You know those silicone armbands that turn the touch-screen iPod Nano into an oversized watch. Imagine that you could have one of those, only without the Nano, and for €200 instead of €150.
You have now successfully imagined the Mutewatch, a watch named (presumably) for the silence that will gush from friends and coworkers when you tell them how much you paid for it.

The Mutewatch is actually pretty cool: Its face is a multitouch display.

BMW begins testing autonomous car tech on highways

Automakers are always looking to push the boundaries with experimental technology, but BMW seems to be ahead of the curve with respect to autonomous vehicles. Previously, BMW was sticking to closed circuits to show off its TrackTrainer. Now, however, the German automaker is venturing out on to public roads, and it's doing so with an automated 5 Series fitted with advanced ConnectedDrive technology. The system is enabled with a push of a button, once a driver has reached a highway. After it's allowed to work its technical sorcery, the ConnectedDrive system takes over acceleration and braking duty.

AT&T's HTC Holiday Now Known As The Raider?

We all saw this coming. Its a very common occurrence where a phone’s name will change right before its release and the HTC Holiday will be no stranger to this. According to this user agent profile obtained by PocketNow, the HTC Holiday will now be known as the HTC Raider which we saw HTC recently apply for a trademark not too long ago. Sounds like a pretty cool name to me but that title too, will likely change once this 4G LTE enabled device is finally released on AT&T. Internally, AT&T is calling this device the Waikiki but there’s no way that will stick if AT&T knows what’s good for them.

It will be unique, though, thanks to the ergonomically-designed form factor and its Playstation Certification. I know I can't be the only one excited to hear more about this.

Named Retro Alien Couch, possibly to avoid troubles with Taito, the couch is said to feature all fine leather and memory foam cushions. We haven't seen one, let alone tested it with our own behinds, but at the very least, we find the idea to be very appealing to a certain category of customers. The designer says that the customer can choose the color, but this will probably cost an extra.

One of the great things about GUI operating systems is dealing with file management. While some of us from the old days became pretty good at shuffling files around via the command line, seeing graphical representations of files and dragging and dropping them made things much faster and easier. Microsoft has changes planned for the way Windows 8 handles the copying and moving of files. Microsoft cites add-ons TeraCopy, FastCopy, and Copy Handler as software it has looked at for file copying.

MIT's folding CityCar takes a spin on video, still no room for humans

The MIT Media Lab has been working on a folding, stackable electric vehicle for quite a few years now, but it seems those have at least been fairly productive years, as the so-called CityCar has now finally progressed to something resembling a finished prototype. The only problem for those eager to hop into one is that it's a half-sized prototype, which makes accommodating a driver just a tad difficult. It does do a fairly good job of folding itself up though, and MIT expects a full-size version to go into production in 2013.

SignalGuru uses a smartphone camera to help you manage traffic lights, save fuel

Nothing burns fuel (or patience) faster than stop and go traffic, something MIT researchers are hoping to minimize with SignalGuru. The smartphone-based system commands you to slow down or speed up based on whether the light is green, yellow or red to help avoid gas-guzzling activities like idling and accelerating - reducing fuel consumption by 20 percent. Unlike Audi's Travolution system that relies on WiFi and 3G to communicate with traffic lights, this latest development uses your smartphone's camera to detect signal status and create a Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA), which will predict and learn traffic light patterns.
